Saludos!

Packaging Series 5: Newman’s Own

The Economy and Advertising…What Does It Mean For Us?

Let me say upfront, the question isn’t will the economy affect marketing/advertising ..the question is HOW. I think we can all agree that the current economic state is scary and as a result, the advertising and marketing industry will be hit like everyone else. Corporate offices, agencies and marketers alike will, of course, tighten their belts and brace themselves around the country and usually marketing budgets are the first to be cut.  Many marketing tactics and strategies are often viewed as “nice to have” line items on budget spreadsheets. So then the million dollar question is, what can we as advertisers/marketers do about it?

Don’t panic. The marketing and advertising industry is a necessary evil (for lack of a better comparison) our client’s could have the best mousetrap that’s ever been produced but what is it if no one knows about? And whether you have been in this industry for a long time or you’re just starting, it is not for the faint of heart. Client expectations, justification for new creative strategies, managing timelines and budgets,  staying on the pulse of the ever-changing consumer horizon aren’t as easy as they sound. So you are in it and if you are in it to win it – buckle up sweetheart, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

Understand your client’s/organization’s business. I know this goes without saying and many marketers feel they have a pretty good grasp on this and they probably do. But sometimes as account managers we don’t know or understand our client’s fiscal responsibilities and financial business as well as we should. In other words – we don’t know how our client’s get to the bottom line. If you have a client that is in say, retail, you must understand that they need to move product, period. That is how they earn revenue and can afford to keep their proverbial doors open. In these times, they may slow down on buying as much surplus or “fluff” merchandise and opt to stock up on the items they know will move off the shelves. But they cannot move product if they don’t tell people about it so marketing needs won’t go away – they just need to be more targeted and therefore offer a more clear return. Which is where you come in…

Strategically targeted messaging/advertising gets more bang for the buck. I am sure the 30 second gurus of brand awareness advertising will disagree with me but awareness efforts alone will not make people spend money and it never has. Now more than ever it is important that we encourage our clients and companies that the best way to spend marketing dollars is to strategically target offers and communication to audiences that have proven they are more likely to spend their dollars on the brands/items that they believe they cannot live without. Consumers, now more than ever, do not want to depart with their money for useless “above necessity” spending so it is our job to be smart about how we communicate our brand benefits to our companies and consumers.

Understand the mindset of consumers today. Today’s consumers are skeptical about advertising. They don’t trust what they see so by default they don’t trust the companies that are delivering the message – our clients. They are more cautious about where and how they spend their money. They are tired of selling and sales pressure from “the machine”. Finally, they are busy and are desperately seeking quick and easy solutions to their increasingly busy lives.

Budgets will be cut, there is even talk of some layoffs but advertising and marketing has NEVER gone away. We just need to be smarter, thriftier and more tenacious with how we recommend to spending to our clients. The more we are genuinely sensitive to their mounting pressures, the more they are more likely to have us stick around…after the storm passes.

Anything I missed here? What other things do you think are important?

One Month, One Thousand Dollars, One Small Business

This weekend, I found myself at a Beach-Boys-themed party attended almost exclusively by young academics. (I was, I think, the only non-academic in the room. My shrink assures me that I’ll recover.) It’s crunch-time for those seeking academic jobs — and given the amount of competition, the limited opportunities, and America’s imploding economy, most of these folks are justifiably concerned about their prospects.

Basically, I was surrounded by smart, quirky, interesting people who — in many cases — hadn’t held a “real” job in years … if ever. In other words, people who are in a perfect position to start their own businesses.

Would many of them even be interested in such a prospect? Probably not … after all, what’s the point of conquering academia if you’re not going to be an academic? However, talking with them did reiterate, for me, the fact that most small businesses start on the fly — frequently because the proprietor is out of other options. It’d be great if we could all hold onto our day jobs until we have the capital to launch our (well-thought-out, well-timed) micro-businesses, but that simply isn’t usually the case. And, as the New York Times online tells us, the small-business landscape continues to shift beneath our feet, demanding utmost flexibility and hybridization from folks who want to be their own bosses.

So, what’s my point here? Oh, yeah — all of this got me thinking about how one launches a business. Now, there are some great tools out there for people who have some time, or some money, both, and can spend these getting their business off the ground. For the rest of us, I’m offering the One Month, One Thousand Dollar crash course in starting a small business. Look for the pdf — free — on my website as of November 1st, 2008.

Before you get too excited, though, you should know that not everyone can use this outline effectively. I’ll get into the details on that later this week, but the model is fairly self-selecting.

The good news? Well, it’s free — and if you don’t like it, your wasted time will be refunded. Plus, it works, and I can prove it.

So, you know … keep an eye out.
