Everybody has been speculating about the future of “Mobile social networking”, there have been reports and there have been predictions. Recently, ABI Research speculated, there would be more than 140 million mobile subscribers which would use social networks on their mobile phones by 2013. This would amount to $415 million in subscription revenues. They further predict that the subscription would sharply rise after 3-4 years. Another research firm, Juniper research predicted a rise to 600 million subscribers worldwide while, Pyramid research numbers are 950 million.
Whatever the figures, the fact remains clear, Mobile social networking is going to be the buzzword of the future. It is surprising to know that currently, the market is wide open and there isn’t a single mobile social networking application which is striving to get there. Facebook has launched an exclusive dating website for I phone users (http://iphone.facebook.com). This site is certainly going to rock among the facebook users. The reason? I phone is new and its in embryonic stage, Developers are targeting at I phone for developing applications and most importantly, the users of I phone are indeed open and receptive to ideas and applications. I phone is just one platform for mobile however the need of the hour is to have a social network for any and every mobile user. Maybe its about time execs at facebook and Myspace should stop thinking about the existing web turf, move on and capitalize on the mobile market. Early bird will surely catch an eye and probably win the race.
